The dialogue between Joseph Beatty and Thomas Brickhouse, for example, revolved around the compulsion applied to the Guardians: the former, following Aronson, claims that Plato made “a Slip”163 by emphasizing their unwillingness to Return while the latter weakens the kind of “constraint”164 that overcomes that unwillingness: it is a “moral constraint”165 to which they willingly submit. Brickhouse’s position would be frequently echoed in the second phase of interest in the Return.166 But the most influential attempt to show that no selfsacrifice is involved in the Return was made by Terence Irwin in Plato’s Moral Theory (1977):

Plato’s theory of the virtuous man’s motives is tested in VII when he tries to explain why the philosopher who knows the Forms can fairly be expected to return to the cave and take part in ruling. But he does not make the best of his theory, because he is influenced by the contemplative view of the philosopher, and describes him in terms excluded by the practical view. He mistakenly suggests that the philosopher will want to stay contem lating the Forms and will not voluntarily undertake public service (519c4-6).167
